Happy birthday, Maggie Gyllenhaal! The Oscar-winning actor turns 38 today. Born in New York City, Maggie was raised by two parents prominent in the entertainment industry, her mother a television producer and her father an Oscar-nominated director. The family moved to LA, one of the U.S.’s largest acting hubs, when Maggie was young, but it wasn’t until her early teens that she began taking drama classes at Harvard-Wakeland Academy. She landed her first role in a film directed by her father called “Waterland” in 1992. After graduating high school, Maggie moved back to NYC where she went to Columbia and later briefly attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. It wasn’t until 2001 that she returned to film to star in “Riding in Cars with Boys” followed by a role alongside her brother Jake in “Donnie Darko.” After various other roles, Maggie received her first Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of a music journalist opposite Actor Jeff Bridges in the film “Crazy Heart.”
