Happy birthday, Channel 4! This British public service television broadcaster began transmission on this day in 1982. It joined BBC’s two television license-funded services and ITV, bringing the UK’s total television services to four. Originally referred to as ITV2 in the early planning stages, the first show to air (at 16:45 GMT, to be exact) was the still very popular quiz show Countdown. For those of you not familiar with the program, Countdown is a British game show involving word and number puzzles that must be solved in a certain amount of time. The concept is deceptively simple, and we dare you to play along. There is nothing more disheartening than being given 10 letters and only coming up with the word “cat.”
