Modern building design of today is all concrete, steel and glass. But what about modern building design of tomorrow? If you’re Chris Precht, future buildings will be made with bamboo. The co-founder of Penda is hoping to create a low-carbon construction option for China, and despite how odd it sounds at first, it’s not a bad idea. Bamboo is exceptionally fast growing (up to a foot a day) and generates up to 35% more oxygen than other trees. It also absorbs large amounts of carbon dioxide, an important feature in a place where pollution is of mounting concern. Those of you questioning the strength of bamboo will be glad to hear the material is exceptionally strong. In fact, it’s up to three times stronger than a similarly sized steel beam!
Concrete and glass skyscrapers are so 20th century.
