Happy Tom Bawcock’s Eve! What’s that? You’ve never heard of it before? Us either, honestly. Turns out, Tom Bawcock’s Eve is an annual festival held in Mousehole, Cornwall, England. It celebrates Tom Bawcock’s brave efforts to save the village and lift a famine by fishing in a severe storm. Was Tom a real person? Likely yes, but that might not have been his name, as “bawcock” is a nickname that means “fine fellow.” A lantern processional takes place, depending on the year, and Stargazy pie is eaten in mass quantities. It’s not a pretty pie, what with the fish heads protruding through the crust, but we’re sure it’s delicious!
